1. Our Managing Director Announces - We will soon be publishing a series of Family Business Profiles, stories of real family businesses whose experiences will provide readers with insights and examples of some of the family business strategies that worked for them. Read in the Family Business Section about our plans and how to get your family business profile published. Check out our new Recommendations section. Learn about some of our favorite business tools - ones we use ourselves. Read an interview with Karl Bareither for more insight into Family and Business Renewal. And learn about Becoming a Wealth Transfer Specialist. We continue with the Leadership Practices series, since these practices are the foundation for the processes that must be in place in order to achieve success. Reminder: We've developed a couple of quick diagnostic assessments to help you. They are both fr*ee [at least for a while] and we try to deliver 48 hour turnaround of our analysis. Try them! The Holonomic Top Down Assessment asks you about a combination of the 12 Main Enabling Processes that an effective organization has to have operating in order to achieve the 6 Desired Organizational Characteristics of effective organizations. Where your assessment indicates one or more of these are not working in your organization, we'll feed back suggestions as to the underlying Leadership Practices that might not be working. Diagnosing from the other direction - Bottom-Up - we ask you to identify which of 29 Leadership Practices aren't present or working. From that, we point you to Enabling Processes and thus Desired Characteristics that probably aren't functioning.
Whether to contribute, challenge (or hopefully even praise) our newsletter, I encourage you to contact me directly Don, or our editor David. Enjoy, and here's wishing you, your family, your clients... much success! Don Schwerzler, Managing Director 2. Business first family...Family first business:
Family Business ProfilesRarely can you pick up a newspaper or business magazine without reading another “gloom and doom” article about family-owned businesses. The media loves to publish stories about family businesses that are self-destructing and family relationships that have run amok. The juicier the better, it seems. After we read these stories, we wonder how families can get themselves into such difficult and sometimes irreversible circumstances. Then we take a deep breath and try to convince ourselves that nothing like that will ever happen to our family business. But it’s too late. The seed has been planted, and we are discouraged by the stories of failure. On the other hand, success stories are likely to generate a much more positive response. Stories about families that have weathered storms and prospered can give us inspiration, encouragement and insight into our own situations. Family businesses have always been quick to seize a new idea or concept and adapt it for our own. With that in mind, we have decided to add a new feature to our web site and e-zine, Understanding Family Business. We will soon be publishing a series of Family Business Profiles, stories of real family businesses whose experiences will provide readers with insights and examples of some of the family business strategies that worked for them. For this series to be all it can be, we would like your help. If you are a family-owned business and would like your story profiled in Understanding Family Business, please let us know by using our ASK THE EXPERT contact form. In response, we will e-mail or fax a questionnaire to you with a few general questions and ask you to return it to us as soon as you can. After we receive the questionnaire from you, our family business history writer, Phillip Bellury, will contact you for a 10-15 minute interview. Once a first draft of the profile is completed, a copy will be sent to you for final editing and to make sure your story is accurate. It’s that easy for you to have your profile published in our e-zine. Your story may be an inspiration to other family businesses, and the free publicity could also be helpful to your business. If you are a professional service provider and would like to nominate one of your clients for the Family Business Profiles, let us know using the same ASK THE EXPERT form and we will be happy to recognize their success.

3. Legacy through Leadership There are 29 Leadership Practices [LP] that are really the foundation upon which 12 holonomic or enabling processes[HP] are built, and which, in turn, produce 6 desired organizational characteristics [DOC]. We'll look at each in this section. LP12. Ensuring Compatible Interests of ResultsEnsuring compatible interests of results links performance and rewards among individual Associates, the Associates' unit, and the organization as a whole. It recognizes that, within the organization, individuals rise and fall together; that is, gain and pain is shared as profits increase and decrease respectively. As part of this process each employee's personal goals within the organization are consistent with achieving the strategic direction. Take our fr*ee assessment on the 29 Leadership Practices...
