1. Our Managing Director Announces -

Since being announced in our April 9, 2004 issue, our subscription has doubled. And succession planning is taking up even more of our consulting time. So, we have decided to feature our fr*ee succession planning survey again and invite all of you to take advantage of this service.

One of the more popular features of our web site is the ASK THE EXPERT form located on most pages of our web site. It is another complimentary service we offer - where visitors to our web site can pose a question or a problem to our family business triage expert and our multi-disciplinary team.

Dr. Jennifer Byrne has written a book review of Dr. Ken Mackenzie's The Practitioner's Guide for Organizing and Organization. Read the review and use the ASK THE EXPERT link to contact Dr. Byrne who is an experienced user of the diagnostic tools.

The Journal of Accountancy is the trade magazine for the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

In the December issue, they have a section called SMART STOPS ON THE WEB - where they review/recommend 10 web sites and our web site was one of the 10 reviewed. We feel honored!

With the Thanksgiving holiday just passed here in the US, and Christmas rapidly approaching, many families will be spending time together. Remember that the FamilyLore Game is an interactive board game that helps you explore and build your family history. And it makes an excellent gift for the whole family! See our Tips and Recommendations below.

We continue with the Leadership Practices series, since these practices are the foundation for the processes that must be in place in order to achieve success.

Reminder: We've developed a couple of quick diagnostic assessments to help you. They are both fr*ee [at least for a while] and we try to deliver 48 hour turnaround of our analysis. Try them!

The Holonomic Top Down Assessment asks you about a combination of the 12 Main Enabling Processes that an effective organization has to have operating in order to achieve the 6 Desired Organizational Characteristics of effective organizations. Where your assessment indicates one or more of these are not working in your organization, we'll feed back suggestions as to the underlying Leadership Practices that might not be working.

Take our fr*ee Holonomic Top Down Assessment to see what underlying practices might be at fault and causing problem symptoms in your family business .

Diagnosing from the other direction - Bottom-Up - we ask you to identify which of 29 Leadership Practices aren't present or working. From that, we point you to Enabling Processes and thus Desired Characteristics that probably aren't functioning.

Take our fr*ee assessment on the 29 Leadership Practices to see how they affect your family business.

Whether to contribute, challenge (or hopefully even praise) our newsletter, I encourage you to contact me directly Don, or our editor David.

Enjoy, and here's wishing you, your family, your clients... much success!

2. Business first family...Family first business:

Our Succession Planning Survey Will Help You Win The Succession Sweepstakes

[from Issue #023 April 9, 2004]

The odds of successful succession for a family business are dismal - only 30% from first to second generation and 5% to third generation.

We have developed a family succession planning tool that will help define the probabilities for the successful transition of ownership to the next generation of YOUR family.

If you are a family business owner and are interested in seeing how you compare to others like yourself, take a few minutes and complete the short quiz. Your answers will be processed and then reviewed by Don Schwerzler, founder of the Family Business Institute. You simply review a number of questions relating to your family business, your personal life and arrangements, and your family itself, and mark those that apply to your situation. Hit the submit button, and your information will be e-mailed confidentially directly to Don Schwerzler.

After your survey is processed, Don will review your results and e-mail his comments back to you. This confidential feedback has proven very helpful to other family business owners - it might provide the insights you need to beat the family business succession sweepstakes!

Even if you aren't a family business owner, you'll find the survey helpful since it deals with the factors that affect family business succession.

There are 29 Leadership Practices [LP] that are really the foundation upon which 12 holonomic or enabling processes[HP] are built, and which, in turn, produce 6 desired organizational characteristics [DOC]. We'll look at each in this section.

LP10. Ensuring Results Consistency with Strategic Direction

The measurement process is updated as conditions change and it verifies that the results produced are consistent with both the strategic direction and how the organization operates.Dr. Ken Mackenzie is our internationally-recognized organizational expert. These leadership tips are discussed in detail in The Practitioner's Guide for Organizing OrganizationsWould you like to see how the 29 Leadership Practices are affecting your family business?
