1. Our Managing Director Announces -

Welcome to an abbreviated issue of Understanding Family Business. Since our Yahoo Directory listing last month, our web master has been busy with our next major section and pursuing another interest - his pipe band helped celebrate July 4th despite a drenching from the remnants of Hurricane Bill, and they are busy preparing for the upcoming competition season.

Financing A Business is a critical whether you are just staring up, have launched but not yet reached profitability, are profitable but need to expand as you pursue opportunities, or even as you approach succession or exit.

Think of the situations within your own family or clientele - new graduates trying to break into a tight job market who might have to make their own jobs for some time until something opens up in their field; more experienced workers cut adrift from their organizations - loaded with skills but having to start their own business to use those skills...

Our outline page paints the broad picture at Financing A Business.

In the coming weeks we'll be expanding this to provide more details and ideas.

At different stages, Debt or Equity could be the answer, and even Grants should be considered. Read about the pros and cons of different sources, and even about a few that you might have overlooked.

And taking a few moments to look ahead... We'll be doing a major section on getting your local business online - something that virtually every business needs to think about these days, not so that you can repair cars on the other side of the continent or world, but so that you can do the best job of finding and retaining loyal and satisfied customers right at home. Internet business development is just a part of that scene. And we'll look at family feuds - unrealistic expectations families sometimes have of each other, and ways to overcome problems.

Canada and the USA have just celebrated birthdays this past week and I hope the celebratory spirit carries right on through North American summer while our southern friends and families enjoy their "winter".

Whether to contribute, challenge (or hopefully even praise) our newsletter, I encourage you to contact me directly Don, or our editor David.
Enjoy, and here's wishing you, your family, your clients... much success!
