Our Managing Director Announces -

RSS Feed Announced and Explained

Our Managing Director Announces -

We are pleased to announce that our web site has now been enabled to provide RSS Feed. Those of you who know RSS will simply add our feed link to your RSS reader - you saw the link above - and can skip the rest of this issue, since it is devoted entirely to explaining RSS to our many readers who aren't yet familiar with or using this technology.

We have published this newsletter for about 3 years now. You each signed up using a double opt-in system so we could ensure that we sent an issue out to only those who wanted to receive it.

But spam has become an increasing problem on the Internet. Both Internet Service Providers [AOL, Earthlink, Yahoo, etc.] and individuals have adopted increasingly complex methods to filter out spam and ensure that it doesn't get delivered to you. Unfortunately, the filters also catch legitimate e-mail such as our newsletter.

At the same time, each issue contains a lot of information. Sending the whole package to each subscriber uses a lot of Internet capacity [called "bandwidth"].

A new technology has evolved to solve both of these problems. RSS or Real Simple Syndication.

In a nutshell, we will use RSS to let you know about a newsletter issue and other changes to our site. An item has a short summary of the full content. You click on the link to read the full article of issue.

David Jones, our web master, explains RSS and how to subscribe to our feed more fully in the next section.

Bottom line for you? You have more control over the content you get and read from us and from the many other sources of information you will subscribe to from the Internet.

Whether to contribute, challenge (or hopefully even praise) our newsletter, I encourage you to contact me directly Don, or our editor David.

Enjoy, and here's wishing you, your family, your clients... much success!

Business first family...Family first business:

RSS Feed Announced and Explained

Don's right! The bottom line for you in using RSS is that you will have more control over the content you get and read from us and from the many other sources of information you will subscribe to from the Internet.

Seems almost too good to be true - but this new technology really is simple, and it really is an improvement.

Let's start by thinking about how you get information right now...

A web site like ours makes information available by writing it in a language called HTML and adding the page to our site. Directories and search engines like Google and Yahoo etc. visit our site and list the information in their directory so that you can find it when you search. Much like you look up someone in a telephone directory. To help them, we provide Titles, and descriptions or short summaries of the whole page, and that's often what you see in the directory.

When you want to visit a page you have found in the directory, you click on the link and your browser knows how to "find" that address on the Internet. It "reads" the HTML, knows how to interpret it into English or your language, and "presents" it on your browser screen.

RSS or Real Simple Syndication is actually similar.

The web site uses a simpler language - XML - to record a small amount of information about each page - generally the Title, a short Description and a link. The site puts a marker so that you can record the site's "RSS address".

You copy the site's RSS Address to your clipboard.

You will have installed a RSS Reader [sometimes referred to as an aggregator] on your computer. These days, Mozilla's Firefox Browser has a reader built in; Microsoft has just announced that it is going to immediately build a reader into Internet Explorer.

You go to the RSS reader or browser and paste the address from your clipboard into the reader.

You're done! Now, each time you are online, your reader checks with the sites that you have told it told monitor, and if there is new information you'll see the Title and Description in your reader. Click on it then, or later - whenever it suits you. Your browser takes you direct to the site.

... Easy To Find. Watch for the orange or buttons on web sites.

It completely bypasses your e-mail system. No spam. No filtering.

Really Simple!
